As resurfacing work ends on Wallace Street in Shawnee, other roadway projects are beginning, including the repaving of an area of Beard Street, which started Wednesday morning.
John Krywicki, Shawnee city engineer, said the Beard Street project, although in the city limits, is being funded by the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. He said CPN was able to access about $1.5 million in stimulus funding for the project and entered an agreement with Shawnee last year regarding the resurfacing job.
As part of the agreement, the city of Shawnee agreed to take care of any additional right of way issues that arose during the process of resurfacing the road, if necessary. The city also plans to place signal lights at the Hardesty, Gordon Cooper Drive intersection “within the next year,” but that project is not included in the roadway resurfacing, Krywicki said.
The project has been contracted out by CPN and should take about two to three weeks to complete, he said.
The project includes the stretch of roadway on Beard Street “from the bridge, south to the CPN Wellness Center,” Krywicki said.
During the resurfacing period, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, he said.
Meanwhile, street crews from All Roads Paving completed work on Wallace Street between Kickapoo and Union streets Wednesday and will stripe that resurfaced area sometime next week.
The same company began work on Franklin Street from Kickapoo Street to Airport Drive today. That work should be finished by Tuesday, Krywicki said.
Traffic will also be reduced to one lane in that area during the repairs and asphalt surfacing.
