Chairman John “Rocky” Barrett secured a landslide win over opponents Diana Brasfield and Jeremy B. Finch in the 2009 Citizen Potawatomi Nation elections Saturday, according to the nation’s official Web site.
However, official results will not be released until certified by the election committee Wednesday evening, a spokeswoman at the tribal headquarters said Monday.
The certification, as outlined in the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Election Code, cannot occur until a two-day protest period has passed.
Barrett received a total of 2,001 votes, with 1,638 of those being absentee, giving him more than 78 percent of the vote, according to documents released by Michael Dodson and available at potawatomi.org.
According to the documents, voters gave Brasfield a total of 212 votes and gave Finch a total of 321 votes.
More than 21,000 of the 27,000-plus tribal members throughout the U.S. were eligible to vote during the election, Dodson said.
