The Pottawatomie County Health Department Children’s First Program recently celebrated the graduation of Laura and Sumur Watts.
The Children’s First program is free for first-time mothers in the Pottawatomie County area. A staff of professionally trained nurses, like Carol Abbott, provides assessments, parent education and referrals to services and resources for first-time mothers. To be eligible for the program, expectant mothers must enroll before the 28th week or seventh month of pregnancy.
Graduation from the Children’s First Program is challenging, yet rewarding, and requires a two-year commitment from the mother. The mother is provided with guidance, training, free resources and the creation or enhancement of a strong support system. Each step of the way, a registered nurse assists the mother in learning new skills that will help her be a better parent.
“I found myself in such a horrendous situation, and I do not think I would have survived without the Children’s First Program. The program is so rewarding,” Laura Watts said. “I also had a wonderful nurse that helped me every step of the way. I consider Carol Abbott a friend.”
“I prayed for someone to help my daughter and shortly afterwards I found out about the Children’s First program,” Watts said.
“The Children’s First program is the health department’s way of welcoming each child and family to be successful,” said Abbott.
