Some adults celebrated Halloween Friday in Shawnee. Saturday is for the children. Here are four things to remember if parents let their children go Trick-or-Treating.

Halloween fun

Children are getting their costumes ready for the big night — Halloween.
Youngsters dressed up as everything from ghosts and princesses to superheroes will be out in search of candy Saturday evening. Official Trick-or-Treat times may vary by community, but Trick-or-Treat in Shawnee is officially set from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tecumseh’s is is set for 6 to 9 p.m.

Police, fire crews will help

As they do each year, Shawnee police officers and firefighters will be among the emergency responders with patrol cars and fire trucks stationed in various neighborhoods. Officers and firefighters will hand out candy and also will be there to provide a safe place for youngsters should they need assistance.

Motorists should slow down

To ensure a safe and fun night for all, authorities ask motorists to slow down and be mindful of Trick-or-Treaters, especially in neighborhoods where children will be crossing streets.

Suggested tips
• Make sure children are supervised by a responsible adult at all times and make sure children stay with the group
• Only trick-or-treat at well-lit houses
• Make sure costumes are fire retardant
• Don’t let kids eat any candy that has not been checked for safety and discard any treats that appear to have been opened
• Have children carry a flashlight or attach reflective tape to their costumes to make them more visible to motorists
• Walk on sidewalks, not in the street
• Watch out for traffic when crossing the street and don’t cross between parked cars
• Keep speeds low when driving through neighborhoods and watch out for children darting into the street
