Oklahoma artist G. Patrick Riley will present a leather mask workshop Saturday, July 25, at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art.
A nationally recognized artist, Riley frequently works with Mabee-Gerrer as a teaching artist, often teaching mask making and other courses at the museum’s summer camps for children. He also recently assisted high school students in creating masks during an MGMA-sponsored residency at the Jim Thorpe Academy.
In fact, it was an earlier event at the museum that led to the creation of the leather mask workshop. Riley taught a paper mask-making workshop to more than 75 adults and children at a recent MGMA Community Art Day.
According to MGMA curator of education Donna Merkt “many of the adults attending the paper-mask workshop requested that Riley return to host an adult leather-mask workshop and the museum is happy to oblige!”
Presently, two of Riley’s large-scale leather mask sculptures adorn the grounds of the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art and his leather masks are also frequently exhibited at the JRB Gallery in Oklahoma City.  Also, Riley has exhibited masks and presented mask-making workshops across the nation in many prestigious locations, including the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Fairtree Gallery of Contemporary Craft in New York City.
The leather mask workshop is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 25 in the MGMA Volunteer’s Gallery. There is a one-hour lunch break. Participants may bring lunches or visit one of several nearby restaurants. The workshop is open to anyone age 18 and older. The registration fee is $65 for MGMA members and $75 for non-members. The registration fee covers all necessary supplies, though participants may bring personal items to adorn their masks if they choose. Pre-registration is required and must be completed with payment by Sunday, July 12. Registration forms are available at www.mgmoa.org/education/workshops, or you may pay with Visa or MasterCard by phone at 878-5300.
The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is located on the campus of St. Gregory’s University, 1900 W. MacArthur St. in Shawnee.
