On October 11, 2010, the Kelsey Briggs Foundation not only honored the little girl’s memory, but they received a generous donation to support the cause.
Oklahoma journalists Cherokee Ballard and Britten Follett gave the first of many checks to the foundation after sales of the book they co-authored, “Who Killed Kelsey?”
The $1,000 donation will fund a college scholarship awarded to a student who is working toward a degree in child issues, such as abuse prevention.
Kelsey died five years ago on Oct. 11, 2005 after months of documented abuse.  Her mother, Raye Dawn Smith and stepfather, Mike Porter, are both serving prison sentences for allowing the abuse to happen. No one has been charged or convicted of her killing.
Several states held balloon releases in Kelsey’s name on Monday in addition to Oklahoma, including Kentucky and Wisconsin. The foundation will have a booth at Boo on Bell in Shawnee Oct. 23 and are sponsoring a Christmas Toy Drive for Kelsey’s Kids.
The foundation has long-term goals — one of which would establish a facility much like one in Tulsa to house an office for all departments connected with a child abuse investigation. It would provide children a less scary place than a police department to go after they are removed from a home.
