There are 514 registered campers this year at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center, which makes for a significant amount of “household” trash.
And Joe Howard of Central Disposal said there are about 90 poly carts and a few rolloff dumpsters to accommodate the waste produced by International Finals Youth Rodeo contestants and their families.
That makes for one poly cart per every five or so people and requires a lot of flexibility on the part of Central, as there is not one set pick-up day for poly carts at the Expo.
“We picked up the carts Monday and will pick them up on an on-call basis when Mike Jackson calls us,” Howard said. “We’ll pick them up when they are full again.”
Howard said Jackson, Expo operations manager, requested Central provide the poly carts for Expo guests instead of Expo grounds workers setting up the old 55-gallon drums that were there in previous years because “it just looks better.”
“This is the first year for poly carts for the trailers,” Howard said. “We did the rolloffs the last two years for the Expo but otherwise, they used the barrels. We’re going to see how this works this year.”
Central Disposal LLC was awarded the city’s trash service contract this year, replacing Allied Waste, which had been the city’s solid waste removal provider for several years.
Howard said rodeo guests may use Central’s transfer station at 45th and Harrison just as the city’s residents can but “there will be a cost” for them, unlike regular Central customers.
He also said all the standard rules apply for discarding items in the poly carts or rolloffs, such as placing “no hazardous materials” inside them.
For more information about Central, call 275-5854 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
