Authorities responded Friday night to Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center on scanner reports of a riot in the gym, and it’s the second time there’s been problems there in a week, police said.
Tecumseh Asst. Police Chief J.R. Kidney said the call came in to the 911 center about 7:05 p.m., with several Tecumseh officers and sheriff’s deputies responding to the facility at 700 S. Ninth.
There were initially to be about four youth in the gym, Kidney said, but that number grew to 15.
It appeared one juvenile tried to take an officer’s gun, Kidney said, and that is the teen who was transported to the hospital. Scanner reports
indicated the teen had suffered a laceration injury to the back of the head.
Three other teens were treated for injuries on site, he said, and staff members also reportedly suffered minor injuries.
This was the second time in a week there’s been problems at the state’s medium-security juvenile facility.
Another incident Sept. 17 resulted in three teens being removed and taken to Carter Hall Juvenile Detention Center, Kidney said, while one was taken to the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center.
A public information officer for the state’s Office of Juvenile Affairs could not be reached by phone Friday night for any additional details.
