Deputy Chief Dru Tischer said the total award package is for $97,550 for expenses associated with retro-fitting all three fire stations with fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems.
SFD is responsible for 10 percent or $9,755 of the expense making FEMA’s contribution the remaining 90 percent or $87,795.
“We are very excited about this project as none of our stations are currently fitted with fire and life safety equipment of this nature,” Tischer said.
The Assistance to Firefighter’s Grant Program is a competitive grant program designed to enhance firefighter safety by providing funding for this type of project directly from the federal government (FEMA) to the local jurisdiction.
This is the same program that awarded the department $56,500 in 2008 for funding to purchase a generator at Station No. 3 and an extractor-type washing machine to extend the life and safety of firefighter’s turn-out gear.
