Area law enforcement officers were involved in two pursuits in Pottawatomie County over the weekend, one with shots fired by a deputy and the second with the suspect vehicle ramming an Asher police car.
Pottawatomie County Undersheriff Dave Balleweg said Deputy Eric Fletcher was on patrol about 2 a.m. Sunday when he noticed a car full of people that was parked behind a closed business in the Earlsboro area.
When he went to investigate further, the driver of the vehicle fled, and the chase began.
The pursuit continued into Seminole County onto a dead-end road. The deputy knew it was a dead-end so he stopped and turned his patrol car sideways to block the road, he said. The suspect vehicle returned and aimed its direction directly toward the patrol car, Balleweg said, so the deputy fired shots at the suspect vehicle’s tires.
After that, the vehicle travelled into a field, along with the deputy’s scout car and other law enforcement officers, and all vehicles became stuck in the mud, he said.
The occupants of the vehicle fled on foot, but all three were quickly taken into custody on various complaints, including one suspect who had an outstanding warrant.
The first pursuit occurred Saturday afternoon. In that chase, Sheriff Mike Booth said McClain County deputies were in a pursuit stemming from a domestic altercation in that county. The pursuit continued in the Wanette area of Pottawatomie County, where those deputies lost sight of their suspect vehicle.
Booth said Pottawatomie County Deputy Ken VanDuser and an Asher patrol officer went to that area to help search for the suspect vehicle and eventually spotted it.
The suspect vehicle wouldn’t stop and another pursuit began, Booth said. The Asher unit and deputy were able to box in the suspect vehicle with their patrol cars, Booth said, but then the driver began ramming the suspect vehicle against the Asher patrol car. The incident caused minor damage to the Asher patrol car.
The pursuit went from Wanette to Asher and then south towards Ada. Booth said troopers and Pontotoc County deputies joined in before the suspect vehicle crashed close to the Ada city limits. No injuries were reported and McClain County deputies took that suspect into custody.
