Bethel Acres resident the Rev. Herman D. Coffman went to  be with his Lord on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at the age of 97.
He was born in Limestone County Alabama on Feb. 12, 1912 to Benjamin and Sythia Coffman. He lived in Alabama until he was 12 years old when his family moved to the Union School area west of the present Shawnee Lake. He lived in Pottawatomie County the remainder of his life. When he was 16 years old, his father died and he dropped out of school to help support his family. After four years he returned to finish school, graduating from Bethel High School in 1935 at the age of 22.
Herman married Roma Magnino on Dec. 15, 1935. They were blessed with 60 years of marriage and one son, Dave Coffman, before she passed away in 1996. He married Velma Hart Weston in 1996 and she passed away in 2003. He was a retired minister of the First Church of God. He pastored the First Church of God at 11th and Shawnee streets for 25 years. He also pastored numerous other churches in the area. In later years he attended Bethel United Methodist Church and Blackburn Chapel Baptist Church. Rev. Coffman was bi-vocational. He worked at the Shawnee Milling Co. for 31  years. He farmed and raised cattle and chickens. His hobbies were working with his cattle and raising a garden.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Vona Simmons and Nellie Longworth; brothers, Charlie, Robert (Bob), Felix and B.J. He was the last survivor of his siblings.
Survivors include son, Dave Coffman and Melba of Bethel Acres; grandchildren, Jeff and Lisa Coffman of Flower Mound, Texas, Susan and Bryan Watson of Bethel Acres, Cindy and Billy Logsdon of Shawnee, and Craig and Lisa Coffman of Franklin Tenn.; 11 great grandchildren, Kyle and Chelsey Coffman of Flower Mound, Texas, Andrew, Johnathon and Matthew Watson of Shawnee, Kinsey, Katie and Riley Logsdon of Shawnee, and Eleanor, Olivia and Carter Coffman of Franklin, Tenn.; sisters-in-law, Irene Coffman and Bessie Coffman; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
His family admired him deeply and considered him to be a most caring and loving father and grandpa. His extended family was very special to him. Herman touched so many hearts in life changing ways and he will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
The family wishes to thank Stewart Home Care Service and Golden Rule Nursing Home for the care provided.
Visitation will begin 2 p.m. Saturday and the family will be at the funeral home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday to received friends.
Services to celebrate his life will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at Blackburn Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Waldo Young, Pastors Chris Tally and Chris Carter officiating.
