Longtime Maud resident Winfred B. Fife, 85, passed from this life Friday, July 18, 2008, just seven days short of his 86th Birthday at Select Specialty Care Hospital in Oklahoma City.
He was born July 25, 1922, in Seminole to Louis Mundy Fife and Jeannetta (Joseph) Fife.
Winfred served in the U.S. Navy following high school as a Seaman Quarter Master 3rd Class serving at the Naval reserve and at the USNTS in San Diego, Calif. He also served on the USS New Mexico, USS Mississippi, USS Idaho and the USS Pennsylvania. Winfred was awarded the National Defence Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the United States Service Medal.
He lived in Paramount, Calif., for 20 years before returning to Maud in 1972. He was a member of Achena Indian Presbyterian Church near Maud.
Winfred married Nema Harjo June 19, 1945 in Maud. She preceded him in death on April 20, 1983 after 37 years of marriage. He later married Wanda Stewart on May 16, 1982 in Shawnee.
Winfred is also preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Nema (Harjo) Fife and by one son, Donald Ray Fife who died in 1976.
He is survived by his wife Wanda of the home; one son, James Fife of Norman; six daughters and sons-in-law, Sammye Fife, Cheryl Fife and Retta and Larry Brennan all of Maud, Melissa and Randall Hawkins of Ada, Tiara Stewart of San Diego, Calif., and Tamara Stewart of Norman. Other survivors include nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren with two on the way and a host of other family and dear friends.
A wake service will be held at 6 p.m., Monday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole.
Service will be 10:30 a.m. at Heartland Family Church 214 W. Strothers in Seminole with the Rev. Malcom Tiger and the Rev. Dorsey Nero officiating the service. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery north of Seminole with Military Honors.
Casket Bearers will be grandsons, Tony Fife, Marc Brennan, Loren Blake Fife, Bradley Hawkins; grandsons-in-law, James Kinsey, Zac Horton, Robert Thomas and Simon Harjo.
Honorary Bearers will be Larry Brennan, Randall Hawkins, Dale Lemons, George McGirt, Bobby McGirt, Dean McGirt, Dale McGirt, Don Tiger, Louis Fife and Ethan Deere.
