Norman resident John Monk, 76, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 in Midwest City.
He was born May 12, 1933 in St. Louis, Okla. to Charley “Red” and Ocie “Big Mama” (Ryan) Monk. He was reared in St. Louis. He had also lived in Healdton, Midwest City and Del City. He was a resident of Little Axe for the past 35 years. Mr. Monk attended school in St. Louis. His first 11 years of school were attended without an absence or a tardy. During his senior year, he had Rheumatic Fever.
On July 15, 1965, he married Jan Harington in Midwest City. He was a truck driver, he drove for many companies. He retired from TG&Y and later retired from Braum's. During his career, he won numerous safe driving awards. Mr. Monk was a mason with the Myrtle Lodge in Oklahoma City and a 32nd Degree Mason with Scottish Rite Consistory in Guthrie. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were the focal point in his life. He also enjoyed watching westerns, especially John Wayne westerns, and attending church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; great granddaughter, Daisy Monk; brother, Charles Monk; sister, Cora “Mouse” Ryan; infant sister, Jenny Mae Monk and son, Terry Hill.
Survivors include wife Jan Monk, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Jonene and Deon Rich of Healdton, Donna Kay and Rick Thornhill of Norman, and Susan Monk of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Mindy Monk of Little Axe and David and Diane Hill of Summerville, S. C.; sister and brother-in-law, Corine and Buck Parsons of Tecumseh; grandchildren, Kristy and Jeremy Birkes, Lynnae Monk, Cara and Scott Wolfe, Brandon Rich and Codi Rich; great-grandchildren, John Thomas “J. T.” Monk, Brianna Monk and Caleb Wolfe; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family has designated the First Baptist Church of Little Axe Building Fund as appropriate for memorials.
Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the First Baptist Church of Little Axe with Dr. Sunny Stuart officiating. Burial will be at Brown Cemetery. The casket will remain open until service time and will not be reopened following the service. The family will gather at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to greet friends.
