Norman resident Eloise Norene Tower was born in Tyler, Texas, on Feb. 9, 1913, to John N. Culbert and Mary Alice Whatley Culbert. She passed away Sunday, Nov. 11, 2009, in Norman.
She moved with her family to Oklahoma in 1917. She was married to Walter Frederick Tower in Altus on June 27, 1935,
Mrs. Tower, a teacher in high school and college, was a graduate of Gould High School, Southwestern State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma, and The University of Oklahoma in Norman from which she received the M.A. Degree in English and Drama. She directed many plays, both at Shawnee High School and at St. Gregory's College, and for a time was active as a director in the Shawnee Little Theater. In 1981 she received the Governor's Arts Award for Community Service.
She was a member of First Christian Church in Shawnee, the Shakespeare Club, and the Shawnee Fine Arts Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Maud Edgar and Leone Lambert; two brothers, Lewis Culbert and Homer Culbert: two sister-in-laws, Gladny Culbert and Ruby Culbert; three brothers-in-law, Philo Lambert, Othal Edgar, Larman Heath.
Mrs. Tower is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and William Storm; three grandchildren and their spouses, Cindy and David Fetter, Terry and James Best and David and Cathy Storm, all of Norman; six great-grandchildren, Catherine and Robert Fetter, Wade and William Best, Audrey and Allison Storm; one stepgreat-grandchild, Christopher Van Horn and wife Brandy, and their son, Gabriel; one sister, Mary Ruth Heath of Oklahoma City; two half sisters-in law, Sunny Jo Roof of Thomas and Walterene Self of Oklahoma City; and several nieces, nephews, other family and friends
Service will be in the Walker Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, with Pastor Ray Belford officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
