Shawnee’s annual trophy auction and pig roast brought out several hundred folks Monday night to the Expo for a good time and effort to raise funds for this year’s 72nd Junior Livestock Show. The event is held at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center and for the second consecutive year it was in the conference center.
This year’s show is scheduled for March 2-6.
Two longtime supporters who have assisted with the Junior Livestock Show for many years were honored Monday night just before the live auction began. Don Britton and Larry Chambers were the two who were honored and deservingly so.
Britton spent 27 years with the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension service, many of those in Pottawatomie County, before retiring. He was involved in a number of aspects of the show.
Chambers was a longtime vo-ag teacher, spending nearly 25 years in the field, and his students at Asher dominated the sheep division of the show for a number of years.
The live auction generated $15,900, the silent auction brought another $1,780 and ticket sales accounted for $2,695, bringing the total to $20,375.
The funds raised during Monday night’s event pay for the trophies and jackets the winning exhibitors earn during next month’s show, along with providing some money to help with the premium auction.
Mike Jackson, the operations manager of the Expo Center, said he and his staff set up seating for 400 people for the event.
As he and I discussed Tuesday, there weren’t many empty seats and if all of the 4-Hers and FFA students who were helping with the event had been seated, it probably could be considered full or at least close to it.

As part of an ongoing effort to educate consumers about fraud, Attorney General Drew Edmondson and AARP Oklahoma announced they will join forces to host the state’s fifth annual Consumer Protection Day at the Capitol.
The event is slated for Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the state capitol, and will feature free document shredding services. Edmondson and representatives from AARP also will be joined at the event by representatives of consumer and law enforcement groups from across the state, who will be on hand to answer consumer questions and provide information about various types of consumer fraud.
Document destruction company Shred-It will provide free document shredding for consumers on the capitol’s south side.
“Consumer Protection Day at the Capitol is an opportunity for Oklahomans to learn about new scams and about ways to protect themselves,” Edmondson said. “The groups that participate in this event come from all areas of protection and prevention. These are people on the front lines in the fight against fraud, and I am grateful for their service.”
This is the event’s fifth year for the event.
