The education department at St. Gregory’s University will host a professional development workshop June 21-25 and June 28-30 for middle school math teachers.
The free workshop is being presented by the University of Tulsa through a grant from the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s “Math Improvement Project.” The SGU workshop site is one of only three in the state.
Participants must be sixth, seventh and/or eighth grade mathematics teachers (including those who teach Algebra I in those grades). The professional development program includes a Mathematics Academy (MA), a Learning Community Academy (LCA) and online courses for both the MA and LCA. Teachers who complete one of the programs and successfully complete the Middle Level/Intermediate Mathematics Oklahoma Subject Area Test prior to or subsequent to completion of a professional development program will receive a stipend in the amount of $1,000 from the State Department of Education.
The main focus of the MA is to develop content knowledge specific to the Middle Level Mathematics test. It is for teachers who have not passed the test. Teacher reflective thinking is the main thrust of the LCA, which is for teachers who have middle level certification. Online courses for the MA and LCA will be offered in the fall.
Class hours for each academy are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. Any missed hours/days of participation must be made up to secure the $1,000 stipend. For participants who travel more than 60 miles, the program will provide lodging for the night prior to the session and each night of the session until the last day. Middle school special education teachers who teach mathematics who need Middle Level Mathematics Certification are welcome to attend.
For more information or to obtain a registration form, contact Mary Stewart via e-mail at mary-stewart@utulsa.edu or fax the request to 918-631-3501. Stewart will send participants an online registration form which will help identify which academy (MA or LCA) is most appropriate.
