During the great depression of the 1930’s Oklahoma’s young people migrated to California to find work. Leaving behind their parents who had worked a lifetime and were now living in poverty; there were no Rest Homes and Social Security did not exist. The Counties provided what was called “Pest Houses” for seniors who could no longer work and provide for themselves.
The conditions were deplorable and the great people of our state submitted and passed a proposal for a one cent sales tax dedicated to Old Age Assistance. Oklahomans showed the rest of the nation in that great depression a willingness to share what little they had so Oklahoma Seniors could enjoy a measure of security during their golden years.
Silver Haired Legislator Charles Campbell and his wife Donna have given freely of their time and talents to improve conditions for seniors in Oklahoma for the past 12 years. Charles is a mirror reflection of the unselfish leadership of the 1930’s that passed the one cent sales tax to provide Old Age Assistance. Charles is providing the leadership and leading the fight to maintain the necessary state revenue (7.4 million) to provide one wholesome and nutritious meal five days a week for low income and homebound seniors.
May God bless your good work Charles and Donna Campbell!
