The walk was held two weeks ago at Shawnee Mall. Kim Rawls, who always heads up this effort along with her great bunch of volunteers, sends along some special thanks to the ambassador family Carson and his parents Glen and Kasey Long and to Bill Ford, president of Shawnee Milling Co., who served as honorary chairman this year.

When Shawnee city commissioners gather for a special meeting Monday evening, they could take action on a package of capital improvements of which some were discussed during the city’s budget process earlier this year.
The agenda calls for discussion, consideration, and possible action of capital improvement projects and methods of funding.

Shawnee’s Community Development and Planning Director Justin Erickson pointed out during Monday’s night’s public hearing on the proposed $20 million regional park, that an economic impact analysis is being conducted by Oklahoma State University and should be completed in the near future.
The annual Farmer/Rancher Appreciation and Awards dinner is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept.8, in the expo conference center. Each year the Shawnee District Conservation awards are presented. The Shawnee Chamber Agri-Business Person of the Year is also recognized during the dinner.

It’s been a while since I’ve been called out during the middle of the night to cover a major breaking news event in Shawnee. But that was the case Thursday morning when the News-Star’s distribution manager and advised there was a fire raging near Main and Bell.
When Shawnee Airport Advisory board members gather this evening, they will hear a presentation by the U.S. Air Force regarding the possible installation of a temporary control tower at Shawnee Regional Airport.

He said “Mike, enough cannot be said for our all of local volunteer fire fighters. These guys worked non stop for almost 3 solid days to put the wildfire out near my house at Asher. No one can thank these guys enough, especially the Asher fire crew. They worked almost non stop in over 100 degree temperatures for almost the whole time.
Shawnee’s March of Dimes will hold its kickoff meeting at noon on Monday, Aug. 29, at Shawnee Mall, right across from Santa Fe Restaurant.
This year’s walk is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 15, at the mall. The walk begins at the food court.
An “Extension Recycling Day” has been scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 9, at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds in Chandler and the Gateway Ag Supplies in Prague.

This a discussion item only Monday night, but it would behoove citizens to show up and listen, possibly ask questions in the citizen participation portion of the meeting what they are considering.
The Greater Shawnee Chamber of Commerce “Shop Shawnee” program is about to launch. It will begin the same day as Oklahoma’s tax free weekend, Friday, Aug. 5 through Sunday, Aug. 7, and will continue each of the following three weekends in August.
It was 4 a.m. when the phone rang a week ago Monday morning. As I picked up the phone, I heard the voice of my sister-in-law Nellie on the other end. In a crackling voice, she told me Randy, her husband, had just passed away.
