Bob Snelson, Shawnee, has to be one proud grandad. His grandson, Bo Snelson, who graduated in May from Memorial High School in Pasadena, Texas, is on the Navy football team this fall.
Bo is the son of John and Mandy Snelson. John is the head football coach at Memorial High School.
It was one of the most memorable days of John and Mandy’s life when earlier this year they watched their son sign the national letter of intent to attend the Naval Academy.
Reportedly, in addition to Navy, Bo was recruited by Columbia, Dartmouth and Texas Tech. He visited those schools in addition to the Naval Academy.
According to an article in the Texas Prep Insider, young Snelson, who was both a quarterback and running back, was arguably one of Pasadena’s most electrifying and entertaining players ever to strap on a helmet. In that same article he was described as “Memorial’s offensive juggernaut for the last two years.”
Snelson is 5-8, and weighs 175 pounds. In three varsity seasons, he reportedly racked up 4,914 yards rushing, scored 57 touchdowns and during his senior season as quarterback, earned Most Valuable Player honors in District 22 of Class 5A.
He is listed as one of the top newcomers for the Midshipmen this season in Phil Steele’s College 2009 Football Preview. Navy barely was defeated last weekend by heavily favored Ohio State University.
And there is another connection John and Mandy have. In fact, one might say that Oklahoma Baptist University has somewhat of a connection.
Bob Snelson says that his son and daughter-in-law, John and Mandy, graduated from Southwest Baptist University located in Bolivar, Mo. Bo was born in Bolivar.
Dr. David Whitlock, who took over as OBU president here last November, came to Shawnee from Southwest Baptist University. John and Mandy, Bob says, were students at SBU while Dr. Whitlock was there.

Justin Erickson, Shawnee’s Community Development Director, has provided an update on the code compliance and cleanup campaign. The campaign, which has been a joint venture since June 1 between the city and the Greater Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, continues to make progress.
Erickson pointed out “We are focusing on diligently working through our backlog of dilapidated buildings. We are holding hearings monthly regarding the condemnation of structures. “We recently ordered the removal of four structures, including 1522 E. Walnut (house), 328 S. Minnesota (house), 329 S. Oklahoma (house), and 217 S. Oklahoma (garage). We have also worked with the Shawnee Urban Renewal Authority to establish a demolition program.”
He explained “under this program, qualified individuals (low/moderate income) can get financial assistance for the demolition of homes on their property where the city has declared the structure a blight on the neighborhood. Interested individuals can contact Urban Renewal at 273-1938 for more information,” he said.
