Pam Robinson, president of the Salvation Army Advisory Board of Directors, reminds folks that volunteers are needed for the backpack distribution project this coming week.
She writes “how would you like to interject some fun into the week of Aug. 10? Have we got opportunities for you!
“The week of Aug. 10 is the official distribution of backpacks for Pottawatomie and Seminole counties. On distribution day, we set the room up in stations such as eligibility, prayer requests, thrift store voucher. Peruse this list of opportunities and see where you can plug in,” she encourages people.
Here is the schedule of what will take place.
Monday, Aug. 10 at 5 p.m. — Packing the backpacks at the Army with school supplies. For those with 8-5 jobs, this time allows you to help, she says.
Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug.11-12, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.— Distribution of the backpacks will occur at New Life Church in Wewoka. The church will provide assistance, but extra hands to give breaks can always be used.
Thursday and Friday Aug. 13-14 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.— Distribution of the backpacks will occur at the Salvation Army in Shawnee.

The Pottawatomie County Genealogy Club will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, Aug. 10, at 6 p.m. at the Santa Fe Depot. For those not familiar with its location, the Depot is located on East Main at the Santa Fe Railroad tracks.
There will be a special program with a multiple-media presentation. Lisa Lempges, informational service manager at the Pioneer Library, Shawnee, will be one of the speakers. Kathryn Ramsey, genealogist librarian for Pioneer Library System, Norman will make a presentation.
All members of the Pottawatomie Genealogy Club are urged to attend. Members of the public also are invited to this special program.

AT&T has announced it has increased its social and environmental investments despite the recent economic downturn. In its 2008 Citizenship and Sustainability Report, the company spotlights more than $865 million in multi-year investments for important education, environmental and volunteerism programs to help strengthen communities, stimulate economic growth and ensure America’s global competitiveness.
Jerry Bayliss, AT&T official who serves this area, sent along some information on the impact to Shawnee and the surrounding Pottawatomie County area. Since 2006, AT&T has made $17,400 in contributions to the Greater Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, Pottawatomie County United Way, Shawnee Family YMCA, Oklahoma Baptist University and St. Gregory’s University along with many volunteer hours to benefit these organizations he said.
The Telephone Pioneers, through their active and retiree members, volunteer to support the UW Day of Caring, Christmas for Needy Families and other community activities.
In Oklahoma, AT&T Aspire grants totaled more than $286,000, with contributions for dropout prevention programs going to several schools and organizations.
In 2008, AT&T and its Oklahoma employees contributed more than $2.7 million through corporate, employee and AT&T Foundation giving programs. In addition, AT&T employees and retirees donated more than 225,000 hours of personal time to community outreach activities – worth more than $4.4 million, he said.

This is a reminder about the Pottawatomie County Young Leaders Society which is being formed in connection with the local United Way. The inaugural event and kick-off party is scheduled for Thursday evening, Aug. 13, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the FireLake Grand Casino.
It will be held in the grand stand sports grill bullpen. It’s sponsored by the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and FireLake Enterprises.
This year’s drive chairman is Casey Bell, of Arvest Bank. This is a new idea he is implementing as part of the United Way efforts in the upcoming UW campaign. Bell says it’s a time to mix and mingle with friends under 40 and learn about the UW cause.

Stephanie Meiler, with the Expo Center, says that G&S Promotions is sponsoring a gun show in Shawnee at the Expo Center on Saturday, Aug. 15, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. and on Sunday Aug. 16, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. There will be a large selection of new and used rifles, shotguns, handguns, knives, ammunition and accessories. Customers are encouraged to bring their own items, she says, to be bought, sold, or traded. Admission is $6 for adults and it’s free for children 12 and.
