Reader agrees with guest editorial
I just wanted to say that Jamie Bergsten’s article the other day on watching what you say in front of children and doing what is right in front of children, was right on and it’s one of the best guest editorials I’ve read in a long time. Keep up the good work, Jamie.
Are new vehicles necessary for city?
Reading the paper today, I see where Shawnee needs, is looking for, about $55 million. I don’t know where they can get all that much at, but I do have a question. Why is the city buying four-wheel drive, extended cab Chevrolet pickups? What would the city of Shawnee ever need with a four-wheel drive — especially three or four or five of them. I don’t know how many are out there. Just curious. They only cost about $5,000 or $6,000 more than a regular pickup.
Why is the whole burden on residents?
I think it’s great that the Shawnee City Commission finally has a plan to get our water and sewer needs fixed. It’s been a long time coming and it’s way overdue to get working on these projects. I was just wondering if someone would answer this question for me: Why couldn’t Shawnee do a temporary, 1/2-cent sales tax increase instead of putting the whole burden on those of us who are residential water customers? The survival of Shawnee depends on getting these issues solved. Let’s get it done already.
Scoopie’s response: The whole burden will not be put on residential customers. Commercial (business and industry) customers also would see rate increases. Insofar as any temporary sales tax increase, we suggest you visit with city officials and city commissioners about your idea.
