Cell phone usage is a luxury; tax payers shouldn’t foot bill

Tuesday, Scott Brown won the Senate seat formerly held by Ted Kennedy. Why did he win? Was it a referendum on Barack Obama’s presidency? Was it a referendum on the direction of government in general? Senator-Elect Brown ran a campaign against the government takeover of health care, against further taking of our rights by government, and against more spending by government; and he won. People are tired of the government wasting our money. Stopping the takeover of health care is a great place to start changing things. Trashing the job killing, money grabbing tax that is cap and trade is the next thing that should be done. After that we should start eliminating wasteful programs such as the cell phones for the poor program.
In 2008, the government spent $819 million to subsidize low-income telephone services. We will spend $1 billion in 2010.  I don’t begrudge anyone phone service or a cell phone, but I don’t think I, or anyone other than the user, should pay for it. You have seen the commercials for LifeTel or SafeLink, you deserve a phone. If you are on government assistance you are eligible for $1.99 phone service. It is that cheap, because we taxpayers are footing the rest of the bill. Maybe we could use that money to pay down the debt and get ourselves out of this mess. SafeLink says that “cell phone ownership is a right.” I say cell phone ownership is a luxury that you should pay for yourself. Then let’s root out other spending that the government should not be doing.
