Oklahoma’s Rifle Association is sponsoring a gun safety for kids class this Saturday, July 17, at the Shoot-N-Iron Shooting Academy at 17205 Gaddy Road.
The academy is operated by former Pottawatomie County Sheriff and retired Shawnee Police Officer Paul Abel. Abel said the class begins at 9 a.m. that day and should be finished by about 2 p.m.
The age limit is for kids between 4 and 14, and each kid or group of kids must be accompanied by an adult, Abel explained.
Lunch and ammunition will be provided. The cost for the class is $12 per child and reservations are required, he said. To register, call 405-273-4822. Abel asks those interested to make reservations quickly because the class will be limited to the first 30 who call and sign up.

An apology is due from me for a wrong name in a Sunday page 1 article on the IFYR. In the top story on the page in that issue, I identified Bill Chrz as Bill Underwood. His photo also was on the page with Roper Joe, the miniature dachshund who has accompanied Chrz and his wife Corine to the IFYR for the past six years.
During our conversation last Saturday, Chrz informed me that he served for eight years as a deputy sheriff here in Pottawatomie County under then Sheriff Billy Phillips. In fact, he said he was dispatching the night Phillips was involved in a serious traffic accident on West MacArthur and Market Streets.
The late Jim Bradshaw and I went to the accident scene that evening and covered that wreck. Phillips suffered some serious injuries in the accident.
Chrz and his wife reside in Perry and they make the annual trek to the IFYR serving on the camping committee headed up by their daughter Renee Underwood.
Again, my apologies to Bill.

Six of the 10 local candidates on the July 27 election ballots have accepted invitations to participate in a candidate forum on Thursday evening.
The forum, sponsored by PAVE (Pottawatomie County Advocates for Voter Education), will begin at 7 p.m. in the Shawnee City Hall commission chambers. It will be broadcast live on cable channel 30, streamed online through the city’s website, and then will be rebroadcast several times before the election.
Three of the four candidates for the Republican nomination for the State House District 27 seat will participate.
They are Josh Cockroft, Don Rominger Jr. and Norman Seaberg. A fourth candidate, Richard Bennett, has not responded.
The Democratic nominee, Chris Odneal, does not have a primary opponent but will be invited to participate in another forum before the General Election in November.
Both candidates for the Democratic nomination for District Attorney, challenger Bill Roberson and incumbent Richard Smothermon, have accepted the invitation.
Since no Republicans or independents filed, the winner of that primary will be automatically elected.
Two of the four candidates for Shawnee City Commission have agreed to participate in the forum, but in both cases, their opponents have not said they will.
John Winterringer, who is seeking re-election to the Ward 5 seat, will participate, but his opponent, Will Walker, has not responded.
Steve C. Smith, candidate for the Ward 6 seat, has accepted, but his opponent, Candie Swinney, has indicated she has a conflict.
The city posts are non-partisan, and since there are only two in each race, the winners of the July 27 balloting will be elected.
Ronnye Sharp will serve as moderator for the forum. Candidates will make brief opening statements before answering written questions submitted from the audience. The questions will be screened for relevance and duplication.
The event is open to the public at no charge.
PAVE is the successor organization to the county’s League of Women Voters chapter. The group conducts candidate forums, works to inform voters on issues and assists in voter registration. It is a non-partisan group dedicated to a more informed electorate, said PAVE president Marilyn Bradford.
PAVE now has a Facebook page where anyone interested in joining can leave contact information.
The page will also be used for non-partisan voter education information.
