I’d like to wish my wife, Pat, a happy anniversary today. We are celebrating 31 years of marriage. When people inquire how long we have been married, she frequently replies the number of years, then adds “and still marking time.”

Even though this year’s International Finals Youth Rodeo will be without announcer Mark McGee who was killed in May while operating his lawn tractor at home, it’s been officially confirmed Mark’s cousin Don McGee will be in the announcing booth to serve in his place. The other announcer will be Jim Pugh, who served along side Mark for several years.
The IFYR is scheduled for July 13-18 at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center.
Suzanne Gilbert, a member of the rodeo committee and a mainstay in the IFYR since its inception 17 years ago, also says that Ken Etchieson will head up the IFYR Hall of Fame induction ceremony Wednesday evening, July 15, at the Expo Center.
Etchieson, who was the general manager of the Expo Center for more than 20 years, was the brain trust of the IFYR.
Two former IFYR All-Around champions, along with McGee, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
McGee, from Valliant, was the “voice of the IFYR” for 16 years as announcer for the world’s richest youth rodeo.
McGee will be inducted into the IFYR Hall of Fame along with former IFYR standouts, Cord McCoy and his older brother Jet.
Cord won the All-Around in 1997, and Jet captured it in 1998.
McGee had announced the rodeo since its inception in 1993.
The ceremony will take place 6:30 p.m. in the foyer of the conference center at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center. They also will be recognized during the 7:30 p.m. performance that evening and among the special guests attending will be Lt. Gov. Jari Askins.

Had a caller this week concerning the high school track at Jim Thorpe Stadium. “Shawnee will probably never have enough money to build a first-class track. Why don’t we tear up the old track, put down a surface for practicing, use OBU’s track, lease it and use the money to upgrade our facilities. Our visitors have to use Port-a-potties at the football games.
I cannot think of another school in the state of Oklahoma where the guests had to go to a Port-a-potty. So let’s build restrooms and update our restrooms because we will never raise enough money to build a first class track.”
