St. Gregory’s University and the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center once again showed the generosity of this community during the latest winter storm.
Brad Collins, public information director at SGU, said the university provided “a soft pillow and a warm bed to some deserving guests this past weekend. Approximately 350 contractors and Oklahoma Gas & Electric workers from 16 states have descended on the Shawnee area to help restore power and assess damage in the wake of this week’s winter storm.” He said a portion of those crews stayed on its campus through Sunday.
“We just want to help in any way we can,” said SGU Provost Dr. Richard Ludwick. “These people are sacrificing much by coming here to assist in the restoration efforts. Part of our mission as a university is to reach out and serve our community, so our doors are definitely open to them.”
SGU officials said the school’s on-campus food service, Aramark, also offered to help feed the crews throughout their stay.
“This is a large task, a multi-step process,” said Mike Douglas, a logistics section chief for OG&E. “Not only are these guys out assessing and restoring, but we’ve also got to make sure they’ve got a warm meal and a warm place to sleep. The Shawnee community has really stepped up in a short amount of time to be very accommodating to us. We’ve got beds for everyone.”
Douglas said more than 10,000 OG&E customers were without power statewide last Friday night with 2,500 of those in the Shawnee area. He said in addition to SGU, crews also were also assisted by the Shawnee Expo Center.
“This has been a heck of an event with the ice on Thursday and the heavy snow (Friday),” Douglas said. “We’re going to do our best to get out there and hopefully have everything back to normal within the next few days.”
Collins, said about 30 OG&E personnel stayed on the campus through Sunday night.
Chris Dunlap, superintendent of the Expo Center, said that while none of the personnel stayed overnight at the Expo Center, about 150 were fed each day through breakfast this morning at the Expo by a caterer OG&E contracts with.
This is just another way Shawnee folks stepped to assist those who were trying to help restore power and many of those were away from their hometowns and cities.
