SHAWNEE, Okla. —

The first colors that come to mind when lantana plants are considered are likely to be a yellow-orange mixture. Plant developers have successfully increased the choices available. As the photo, at left, taken in a garden center shows, the range of bloom colors includes lemon yellow, pink, lavender, gold, red/orange, white and combinations of these.

Plant sizes vary also from those that grow upright to almost two feet in height and several feet across to trailing plants that can cascade over the sides of a flowerpot or a raised bed wall.  The typical trailing plants are white or lavender.

Most lantana plants are annuals although there are some cultivars that will leaf out each year. The weather needs to be warm over an extended period for the leaves to begin to form. From now through June is the ideal time to plant these heat-loving plants.

Lantanas need to be planted in full sun to thrive. If they get too much shade, they tend to have mildew and do not bloom well. Some varieties form berries after they bloom. If these are cut off, blooming will reoccur sooner, although blooms will return if the berries are left on. Some of the newer varieties are sterile and do not set berries.

The soil for lantanas should to be well drained. After the plants are established and their root systems begin to grow, the plants are unusually drought tolerant. They tend to develop massive root systems that extend out from the plant in every direction. They respond well to occasional fertilizing, although they will do fine without it. The plants tolerate pruning to keep them within the area you want them.

Butterflies are attracted to the multiple blooms. Lantanas have been successfully used in various public areas around Shawnee. If you have the right place for them, give some a try.
