The PGA Championship looked a lot like the U.S. Open, with only seven players under par when darkness finally covered Oakland Hills on Thursday and put “The Monster” to sleep.
It sounded like a U.S. Open, too.

Cowboys have high hopes entering this year’s campaign

The orange band around quarterback Zac Robinson’s left wrist was inside out, so he had to twist it around to reveal the message inside.
Printed in black letters was Oklahoma State’s preferred ending for this season: Big 12 Champs.
It was with those hopes that the Cowboys opened fall camp this week before meeting Saturday with reporters at the team’s annual media day. Following back-to-back 7-6 seasons that were capped by bowl victories, Oklahoma State wants to make some more noise this season.

Romo no longer obscure NFL quarterback

AP —

Tony Romo was still an obscure backup quarterback who had never thrown a pass in a real game.
He didn’t have a celebrity girlfriend. The undrafted player from a small school could walk around the Dallas Cowboys’ training camp complex and run onto the field wearing his No. 9 jersey without being noticed by the fans clamoring for autographs — or even team owner Jerry Jones.
And that was only two years ago.
“Had we had a little better feel, or a little better read on that, at every step of the way ... I would have said ‘Hello’ to him walking down the hall,” Jones said.
Romo has since been to two Pro Bowls, set team records for yards and touchdowns passing, and his No. 9 jersey — like the one often worn by Jessica Simpson — is now a top seller in the NFL, not only among the Cowboys.
“It’s a different world for him, and I think it should be,” Jones said. “And I think that we’re going to be a benefactor of that.”

Super Bowl or bust?

AP —

Super Bowl or bust?
Not necessarily for Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips. At least that’s what owner Jerry Jones insists.
“It’s wrong to say Super Bowl or Wade doesn’t keep the job,” Jones said. “That is just not correct. That is not a thought to me.”
With Phillips’ supposed successor-in-waiting already on the staff (offensive coordinator Jason Garrett) and being paid like a head coach (about $3 million), there are some who still believe that Phillips has to get the Cowboys to the Super Bowl.
The Cowboys are a legitimate Super Bowl contender, and they go into 2008 as a favorite in the NFC. All 13 Pro Bowl players are back from last season’s team that matched a franchise record by winning 13 games in Phillips’ first season before losing to the New York Giants in the playoffs.
