Shawnee’s Franklin excels in short stint

ST. LOUIS —

Carl Crawford’s glove and a dominant bullpen helped save the AL’s streak.
Crawford pulled back a home run with a leaping grab an inning before Curtis Granderson tripled and scored the tiebreaking run in the eighth, giving the American League a 4-3 victory Tuesday night at the new Busch Stadium.


Goforth atop point standings

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Shawnee resident Kyle Goforth is atop the standings this week at Brill Motor Speedway with 1,255 total points as of July 11 in the modified division.
Goforth finished first in the second heat Saturday, while Chad Miller of Chandler came in fourth. Miller sits at eighth in the points standings with 566.


Banner year for Franklin

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

With the 2009 All-Star Game approaching, Ryan Franklin is having a banner pitching season for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Franklin, who grew up in Spiro, pitched for Seminole State College and presently makes his home in Shawnee, has been a major player in the Cardinals’ 40-34 record and first-place standing in the National League’s Central Division.

Shaw ranks third in interceptions

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Through 12 games, Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz defensive back Fred Shaw ranks third in the interception department of the Arena Football2 League.
Shaw, a Shawnee High School product in his fourth year in the league, has eight interceptions. He trails only league-leader Micha Robinson of the WB Scranton Pioneers with 11 and William Mulder of the Kentucky Horsemen with nine.

Chandler’s Tad Sweitzer is among Brill Motor Speedway’s five first-place entrants after Saturday’s races.
Sweitzer sits at No. 1 in the e-modified category with 582 points after finishing second in the Heat 2 race Saturday. Fellow Chandler resident Mark Robinson, who finished first in the heat, is third in the standings at 474.

Russell Westbrook and Thabo Sefolosha made big baskets in the final 2 minutes Wednesday night, leading the Thunder to an 88-83 victory over the Washington Wizards for their first three-game winning streak of the season.

Paul drives for game-winner in 100-98 win in OKC

Chris Paul performed all kinds of amazing feats in launching his All-Star career in Oklahoma City. There was still something missing.

"I don't think I ever hit any game-winners here," Paul said.

Time to check that off of his list.

Returning again to the city where his NBA career got started, Paul drove the lane for a layup with 2.7 seconds left to lift the New Orleans Hornets to a 100-98 victory against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night.

Oklahoma City's first impression of Greg Oden would not be a lasting one.

Portland's 7-foot center was not a factor last week in the first display of the top two picks in the 2007 NBA draft, No. 1 Oden and No. 2 Kevin Durant.

But Wednesday night in the Trail Blazers' 106-92 victory over the Thunder, Oden showed his potential with 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Oklahoma City Thunder never would have had to go to overtime if Kevin Durant hadn't fumbled the ball away in the closing seconds of regulation.

Given 5 extra minutes, he did everything he could to make up for it.

The fact that the Thunder's normally rowdy crowd was kept away by icy weather didn't keep the team from putting together one of its most impressive wins.

Kevin Durant scored nine of his 18 points in the decisive third quarter, and the Thunder enjoyed big advantages at the free throw line and on the boards to beat the New Jersey Nets 94-85 Monday night in front of just 5,000 fans.
