SHAWNEE, Okla. —

At 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, friends and families are invited to the first evening of class and outreach sessions at Wesley United Methodist Church, 302 E. Independence. Among the activities are brain exercises in various study classes; finger exercises in “knitting for beginners;” community service by mentoring for Project Safe; laughter and fun with youth ministry; and inspirational “Bible Kids” children’s ministry.
The Rev. Kris Steele, associate minister, coordinates the family-friendly Sunday evening program, which will begin its third year of age-appropriate activities, with dinner for everyone in the fellowship hall at 6 p.m. Events to be included are:
• “A Woman’s Heart: God’s Dwelling Place” by Beth Moore, led by Nancy Deichman.
• A men’s Bible study (name to be announced), led by Joel Deichman.
• “Beginnings Part Two: Spiritual Life,” led by Terry Dyke.
• DivorceCare facilitator’s training, led by Nick and Debbie Chlouber.
• Beginning knitting led by Marjean Johnson.
• Support/mentoring outreach ministry at Project Safe, led by Sandra Meyer and Sydney Casey.
• Youth ministry led by Lindsay Burress.
• “Bible Kids” children’s ministry, led by Lauren Edwards, new children’s director at Wesley.
“Bible Kids” will include elementary levels of Bible quiz lessons with a quiz between the children and parents to be scheduled one evening after dinner. Music and active play with videos and CDs will be included each Sunday.
All classes will begin each week at 4:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted. In addition, Steele said, a dinner will be served each week in the fellowship hall at 6 p.m. Jennifer and Chris Carpenter and Laynie and Jason Shebester will again be in charge of the kitchen this semester. There is no set price for the meal, just contributions as people are able.
The purpose of the Sunday evening program is to fulfill the mission statement of the church by “drawing generations together to worship, study and serve.” Sign-up sheets for the various classes will be available near the sanctuary this Sunday. Some of the courses require a book and other related materials. The cost of these materials vary and will be the responsibility of the individual participating in the class.
Scholarships are available to help defray the cost of books. Anyone can contact Steele at 275-1556 for additional information about the Sunday evening ministry.
