Ask people if they know the location of First Christian Church in Shawnee and you will probably get a blank look. Ask them if they know the location of the “pumpkin church,” and almost immediately you will see an expression of recognition.

For the father in despair, struggling to find work to support his family, Catholic Charities helps him find employment and learn new skills.
For the despondent immigrant and his family facing deportation, Catholic charities infuses rays of encouragement with representation and legal services. For those who suffer from AIDS, Catholic Charities volunteers deliver more than nutritional meals that sustain the physical needs.  Often times they provide the human contact that nurtures the soul.


Lilite named minister of music

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

University Baptist Church announces Dr. Louima Lilite as the interim minister of music as of Sept. 6.
Lilite’s responsibilities will include leading worship as well as directing the adult and youth choirs.
In addition to his duties at University Baptist Church, he is also an assistant professor of voice at Oklahoma Baptist University.

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

I wasn’t at the Baptist meeting when they called on Jack to pray at the end, but my pastor was there and he told me about it. The meeting was typical; they began with food, did a little business, listened to a long sermon, took an offering and were about to call it a night.

Sisters at Heart ministry, for women of all ages, will meet at Wesley United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m. The snack supper and fellowship will be highlighted by the music and message of Christian recording artist Patty Curl, who resides in Ponca City.


Golden Hearts seniors celebrate grandparents month

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

Fairview Baptist Church seniors celebrated grandparents month during their monthly luncheon on Friday, Sept. 11.
There were 30 members and three visitors in attendance. After the welcome and announcements there was a scavenger hunt with a “grandparent” theme. The tables were decorated with antiques and memorabilia the seniors readily recognized as being used in their era.

OBU speaker advises advancing gospel

As part of Bison Hill’s Global Outreach Week, guest speaker Nathan Shank challenged Oklahoma Baptist University students to heed the New Testament’s directive that Christians be messengers of God’s grace with people who have never heard about it. He spoke during a student chapel service on Wednesday.

St. Benedict, OSI partner for blood drive today

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

St. Benedict Catholic Church in Shawnee will conduct a blood drive in partnership with Oklahoma Blood Institute from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Benedict Center, 632 N. Kickapoo.
Healthy individuals who are at least 17 and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds are eligible to donate.
Donors are asked to eat a well-balanced meal and increase fluid intake prior to donating.


Talbot presents music, meditation, prayer

Christian recording and performing artist John Michael Talbot will present an evening of music, meditation and prayer inside the St. Gregory’s Abbey Church on Monday. The event, slated for 7:30 p.m., is sponsored by the Oklahoma Alliance for Liturgy and the Arts (OALA), St. Gregory’s Abbey and St. Gregory’s University Campus Ministry. There will be no admission charge, but a free-will offering will be taken.

Behind the curtain or under the proverbial rug, lies the residue that forms statistics, but due to the sensitivity, the names are silent. How well I know.
More than eight years ago I sat for days in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Edwards Hospital in Ft. Smith, Ark., watching my daughter sleep between a fragile life and a likely death. By the grace of God and quality medical response, she made it up and out to a gradual journey of re-entry.

This year’s theme is derived from 2 Kings 22:13a and is “Engage: Go and pray...”

 In Matthew 11:16-19, Jesus tells a parable chastising His generation for their rejection of Him. The rejection of both Jesus and John the Baptist by Jesus’ generation was not due to Jesus and John personally, but the message they preached.
