St. Gregory’s University started the 2009-10 hoops season on a positive note as the Lady Cavaliers defeated visiting Central Baptist College 88-82 Monday night at W.P. Wood fieldhouse.
Sophomore Jalisa Howard led the Lady Cavs with 22 points, including a 6-of-7 showing at the foul line. Howard connected on eight or her 11 attempts from the field.
Allison Klick and Leticia Silva came off the SGU bench to contribute 17 points and 15 points, respectively, and Silva led the Lady Cavs in boards with eight.
Carletta Hernandez, also off the bench, added 11 points for St. Gregory’s. Klick hit five of six attempts from three-point range, and Lacey Craig had a 100-percent (2-of-2) night at the charity stripe.

A 35-yard goal by Rogers State and a 12-save effort by Hillcat keeper Bailey Lynn ended Oklahoma Baptist’s women’s soccer season in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament in Shawnee Saturday, 1-0.
It took a while for the fourth-ranked Bison to get cranking, but Oklahoma Baptist University won the men’s basketball season opener Friday night, 89-65, against Dallas Christian College.
“You have to start somewhere and this is where we are right now,” said OBU coach Doug Tolin. “We’ve got a long way to go and a lot of things to work on. But we did some good things, too. We need to pick it up in practice.”
OBU was an impressive 67 percent from the field but shot just over 50 percent from the free throw line. The Bison committed 25 turnovers – 14 of those unforced.
After trailing the Crusaders for most of the first seven minutes, the Bison used a 15-0 run to take a 21-13 lead with 8:54 left in the first half. Six different Bison scored in the spree, led by Tyler Parker with four points.
From there, the Crusaders only scored back-to-back baskets once as the Bison built a 44-29 halftime cushion.
HENRYETTA — In a contest riddled with turnovers, Prague’s Red Devils notched third place in District 2A-5 with a 47-24 triumph over Henryetta Friday night.
Now playoff bound, the Red Devils will face an undetermined foe in next week’s postseason first round.
