EARLSBORO – It wasn't an easy opening round matchup for the Asher boys in a losing contest to Varnum Thursday night at the Jim Walling Classic in Earlsboro. The Indians never attained an advantage, ultimately falling to the Whippets 69-50.
Varnum go out six unanswered points before Asher's Trevor Martin cracked the goose egg for the Indians with 5:36 left in the quarter. They were outscored 8-6 for the remainder of the quarter before finding themselves on the receiving end of a 15-8 run to go into the half with a 29-16 deficit.
The hits kept coming as Varnum outscore the Indians again 19-13 in the third. The teams went an even 21-21 in the fourth.
Preston Patton led the Indians with 14 points, Chase Eckert had 11 and Brayden Sanders put up 10.
Louie Kishketon led all scores with 18 points for Varnum and Austin Blythe had 16.
The Indians will play Macomb Friday at 2:30 in the first round of consolation play.
