SHAWNEE- No. 19 Wayland Baptist University (17-2, 8-1 SAC) started their 104-62 win over St. Gregory's hot, by getting out to an early 8-0 lead. The Cavs would fight back though, and ended the first quarter only trailing, 18-11. The Flying Queens started out the second quarter shooting well, and forcing turnovers. The Cavs committed 15 turnovers in the first half, but they were also able to force WBU into committing 11 turnovers of their own. SGU (2-14, 0-9 SAC) was playing with energy in the second half, and was able to cut the deficit to only 8, late in the half. However, the Flying Queens finished the last two minutes strong, and increased their lead to 45-29.
Kylee Tatum (SR/Bethel, Okla.) led the Cavs in scoring in the first half with 9 points. Danielle Butler (SR/Ft. Worth, Texas) scored 6 points in the half, and Shanques Garrett (SR/Tulsa, Okla.) added 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 blocks.
The Flying Queens were led offensively in the first half by Shawna Monreal's 10 points, and her sister Shayla added 7 points of her own. Maci Merket scored 9 points in the first half, and Deborah VanDijk scored 8 for WBU.
In the third quarter, WBU started off shooting hot again, and extended their lead to 47. The Flying Queens were forcing turnovers (27 in total), and out-battling the Cavs on rebounds. Wayland Baptist also stole the ball from the Cavaliers 16 times in the game. Jade Jones was the spark plug for the Flying Queens in the third quarter. The Cavs showed life in the fourth quarter, and they even out-scored WBU in the final quarter, 26-23. SGU wouldn't be able to overcome the lead that the Flying Queens had built though, and lost by a final score of 104-62.
Kylee Tatum scored a game high, 24 points (5-10 from 3 pt. range) and she also had 5 assists. Lauren Godbold (FR/Arlington, Texas) scored 10 for the Cavs, and Joette Fernander (JR/Nassau, Bahamas) added 7 points. Shanques Garrett finished with 5 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 blocks.
The Flying Queens were led offensively by the Monreal sisters. Shawna Monreal scored 10 points, while her sister Shayla had 12 points and 7 assists. Jade Jones had a strong performance and added 17 points and 8 rebounds. Morgan Bennett scored 3 points, had 8 assists, and had 5 steals. Maci Merket scored 12 points and Gabby Gonzales scored 14 points.
As a team The Flying Queens had 28 assists, 16 steals, and shot 51.3 percent from the field. Coming into the game WBU was the No. 10 scoring offense in the nation (79.28 PPG), No. 14 in assists per game (16.17), and No. 14 in team field goal percentage (.436).
The Cavs will be back in action at home on Saturday Jan. 28, when they take on Texas Wesleyan University at 3 PM.
