SHAWNEE- The Cavaliers fought hard on Saturday evening, but fell short in the end aginst the Eagles, from Southwestern Christian University (15-9, 7-5 SAC). In the first half the Eagles jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, and the Cavs weren't able to score until about 5 minutes into the game. St. Gregory's (8-11, 4-8 SAC) would close the gap some though, and with 10 minutes left in the first half, the Cavs only trailed 15-18. SCU would pull away a little more though before halftime, and they'd take a 37-30 lead into the locker room. At halftime, the Eagles were led offensively by Jamal Ray's 14 points and 7 rebounds. Shawn Scott scored 11 points in the first half for the Eagles as well. Rodney Smith (SR/Chicago, Ill.) led the Cavs with 12 points in the first half, and Michael Maras (JR/Tulsa, Okla.) socred 8 points going into the break.
In the first half, SCU shot 60 percent from the field, and they held the Cavs to only 35.7 percent from the field.
The second half was played very even, and the Cavs actually outscored the Eagles, 34-32 in the second half. Rodney Smith made two big 3 point shots at the end of the half to keep the Cavs within striking distance of the Eagles, but it was too little too late.
Rodney Smith finished with 22 points and 7 assists for the Cavs. Jordan Rutherford (SR/Houston, Texas) recorded a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Zachary Lemusu (SR/San Diego, Calif.) played well again and scored 12 points. Lemusu has recorded three straight double digit scoring games for the Cavaliers. Michael Maras finished the game with 13 points and 5 rebounds.
The Eagles were led offensively by Jamal Ray's double-double, with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Shawn Scott scored 18 points, had 9 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists. Joshua Simmons scored 9 points and had 8 assists. Marvin White scored 12 points for the Eagles.
The Cavaliers will be back in action at home, on Thursday when they face Bacone College at 8 PM.
