SHAWNEE- St. Gregory's (9-11, 5-8 SAC) played strong as a team on Thursday night to cruise by Bacone College (6-17, 2-11 SAC), 78-62. The Cavs started the game on a 7-0 run before the Warriors finally scored and the Cavs ectended their lead to 23-9 with 10 minutes to play in the first half. SGU started the game by making 12 of their first 16 shots. The Warriors would close the gap slightly before the break, but at halftime St. Gregory's led, 38-29.
In the first half, the Cavs shot 51.7 percent from the field, as a team, and they out-rebounded the Warriors, 22-20. BC had 8 offensive rebounds, and forced the Cavs into 10 turnovers in the first half. Michael Maras (JR/Tulsa, Okla.) scored 12 points in the first half for the Cavs, and the Warriors were led offensively by Mauris Hopkins' 6 points.
The second half started off with a big alley-oop to Zachary Lemusu (SR/San Diego, Calif.), and the Cavs extended their lead to 45-29, only two minutes into the half. Lemusu was a big key to the Cavaliers' second half success, because of his 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 rebounds in the second half alone. Jordan Rutherford (SR/Houston, Texas) also started to heat up in the seocnd half, when he'd score 9 of his 15 total points. The Warriors kept trying to claw their way back into the game, but could never get enough momentum going to stop the hot shooting Cavs. SGU would close out the game to earn the, 78-62 victory.
St. Gregory's played excellent as a team. They finished the game shooting 53.6 percent from the field, 25 team assists, and they out-rebounded BC, 43-37. Not only did SGU shoot for a high percentage, but they also played excellent defense, and held Bacone to shooting only 31.9 percent from the field. Jordan Rutherford recorded a double-double, with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and also dished out 6 assists. Zachary Lemusu had a huge game, by nearly recording a triple double with his 13 points, 9 rebounds, and a career high, 8 assists. Malik Barnett (JR/Midwest City, Okla.) tied a career high, by scoring 15 points. Michael Maras scored 18 points (4-8 from 3 pt. range) and grabbed 5 rebounds, in his very solid performance.
Brandon Scott led Bacone with 16 points and 7 rebounds, and Brandon Chatman scored 12 points.
The Cavaliers will now head to Texas to take on Wayland Baptist University, on Saturday, at 3 PM.
