SHAWNEE- On Thursday night St. Gregory's (2-18, 0-13 SAC) fell 87-77, against Bacone University(9-14, 5-8 SAC).
In the first half the Cavs quickly fell behind 13-4 within the first five minutes, mostly due to the team's 8 turnovers in that time span. The Warriors stole the ball away from the Cavs 7 times in the first quarter. SGU shot 57.1 percent though in the first quarter, which helped them keep the Warrior's within reach. The Cavaliers trailed 14-20 at the end of the first, and within the first two minutes of the second quarter, the Cavs had cut the deficit to just three points (20-23). The Warriors would extend their lead for the next few minutes, but with one minute remaining in the half, SGU only trailed, 33-35. At halftime the score was 36-37.
In the first half, the Cavs were led by Lauren Godbold (FR/Arlington, Texas)'s 10 points, 8 of which came in the second quarter. Shanques Garrett (SR/Tulsa, Okla.) scored 8 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and blocked 4 shots in the first half. As a team, the Cavs shot 66.7 percent from the field (10-15), and they held the Warriors to only 35.9 percent from the field. St. Gregory's turned the ball over 16 times in the first half, 10 off of BC steals, but the Cavaliers also forced the Warriors into committing 12 turnovers.
The Warriors were led offensively by Cierra Miles' 8 points, and Kim Scott's 7 points.
In the third quarter, the Cavs quickly claimed the lead on a Godbold lay-up and the foul, but Bacone would go on a run to make the game, 47-41. The Cavaliers would tie the game at 52 with four minutes to go in the third quarter, and at the end of the quarter the score was 62-59.
In the fourth quarter the Warriors would extend their lead all the way until the final buzzer, to finish with the 87-77 victory. The Warriors key to success on the night was their ability to force the Cavs into commiting turnovers, and then they capitalized on those Cavalier mistakes. Bacone scored 44 points in the paint and they had 17 second chance points. The Warriors also dominated the offensive glass by finishing with 21 offenive rebounds.
The Warriors were led by Kim Scotts' 21 points, 8 reboundsand 4 steals, and Cierra Miles' 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 steals. Terri Baker finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Ashley Barry-Wallace finished with 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 steals.
Shanques Garrett's recorded her second straight double-double with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Her 14 rebounds and 5 blocks were both career highs for the Senior forward. Kelsie Howgard (JR/Menifee, Calif.) scored 15 points, and Tralyn Woodard (SO/Fort Worth) finished with 14 points. Lauren Godbold scored 13 points, and she set career highs by recording 6 assists, and 4 steals. Danielle Butler (SR/Ft. Worth, Texas) scored 10 points.
The Cavs will now travel to Texas to take on Wayland Baptist on Saturday Feb. 11 at 1 PM.
