DALE – It was an evenly matched game Monday as the Dale Pirates capped off their regular season with a 57-47 Senior Night win over Newcastle.
The play was a little flat at times, coach Jeff Edmonson said, but that is to be expected so late in the season on games that don't really matter.
“We wanna go win the playoffs, so I think that's what we were really looking forward to tonight,” Edmonson said.
Trailing 13-10 with one minute left in the first quarter, senior Casey Wenholm kicked off a 10-0 run to the 5:41 mark in the second, giving the Pirates a 20-13 advantage. They traded points for much of the rest of the game until, trailing 45-44 with 3:06 to go, Brett Cunningham made an and-one layup to kick off a 13-2 run for the win.
Cole Seaborn led the Pirates with 15 points and Aaron Hester, cunningham and Reid Davenport had eight apiece.
All five seniors – Seaborn, Davenport, Seth Cody, Hester and Wenholm – started the game in honor of it being the final home game of their high school careers. Wenholm was also honored at halftime of the girls' game for his commitment to serve in the United States Armed Forces after graduation.
The crew is one of the best to come through Dale in Edmonson's time there and though he will be sad to see them go, they still have some unfinished business in the meantime.
“They've worked as hard as any group that's come through here, and we've had some groups that have worked really hard. I'm just excited to keep going on and go to playoffs with this group of guys.”
The Pirates (21-4) begin their postseason stretch Saturday as they travel to Hulbert for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
