FORT WORTH- St. Gregory's (2-20, 0-15 SAC) traveled to Fort Worth on Thursday, to play against Texas Wesleyan University (16-10, 8-7 SAC). The Rams won the game by a final score of 75-59.
In the first quarter, the Rams jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but the Cavs kept the game close early. The first quarter ended with the Rams leading, 17-8. The Cavs scored a quick four points to start the second quarter, and then the Cavs would cut the Rams lead to only 5 points. However, from that point on in the half it was all Texas Wesleyan. TWU closed out the half by going on a 16-0 run, and the Rams took a 37-16 lead into halftime.
Shanques Garrett (SR/Tulsa, Okla.) had a big first half by scoring 10 points and grabbing down 8 rebounds. Lauren Godbold (FR/Arlington, Texas) was the only other Cavalier player to score in the first half, with 6 points. The Cavaliers shot only 25.8 percent from the field, and the Rams shot for 45.7 percent. The Cavs were forced into committing 9 turnovers in the first, and the Rams had a slight edge in rebounds, at 23 to 19. The Rams scored 24 of their 37 points in the paint, in the first half. The biggest difference in the first half between the teams, was the unselfishness of TWU. Texas Wesleyan had 15 assists as a team in the first half alone.
Katelynn Threats scored 15 points for the Rams in the first half, and Bailey Broadnax added 10 more.
In the first few minutes of the third quarter the Cavs were looking strong, and they were out scoring the Rams, but then the Rams heated back up. At the end of the third quarter the score was 37-56.
The Cavs closed the gap in the final minutes of the game, but it wasn't enough to overcome the large deficit that the Rams had built.
Shanques Garrett had a very impressive double-double, with 19 points and 15 rebounds, both of which were career highs. This was Garrett's sixth double-double this season, and her third in the last four games. Kelsie Howgard (JR/Menifee, Calif.) scored all 16 of her points in the second half. Lauren Godbold finished with 13 points and 5 rebounds.
The Rams were led by Katelynn Threats 25 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. Bailey Broadnax finished with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.
TWU finished the game shooting 47.7 percent from the field, and held SGU to only 33.3 percent. The Cavs outscored the Rams on second chance points, 22-12, and the Rams' bench outscored the Cavs' bench, 20-11. TWU scored 42 points in the paint, and the Rams dished out an impressive, 26 assists as a team.
The Cavs will be back in action on Saturday, when Oklahoma City University visits Sumner Field house at 3 PM.
