BETHANY- Saturday afternoon the Cavs went onto Southwestern Christian's home field and swept the Eagles in the double-header. St. Gregory's (17-8, 8-1 SAC) won game one 4-2, and then they won game two, 13-8, in an eight inning game. SGU now moves to 8-1 in conference play, and only trail Oklahoma City University (6-0 SAC) in the standings. Southwestern Christian now moves to 19-11 overall, and 3-6 in conference play.
Mychal Yarbor (JR/Bandon, Ore.) once again threw a gem, in his game one performance. The junior, left-handed pitcher went all 7 innings, only allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 9 batters. Yarbor has now won 5 consecutive starts and is 5-1 overall, with an outstanding 2.11 ERA. He has thrown at least 5 innings in all seven games he's pitched, and he's pitched 6 straight complete games now. The Cavaliers offense had 10 hits in game one, and they scored three of their four runs, in the top of the seventh inning, before closing out the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh.
Armando Fajardo (JR/San Mateo, Calif.) went 2-3 with a walk, a double, and two RBI's in game one, and Ryan Lujan-Leonard (FR) also collected two hits, along with a RBI. Brandon Marerro (JR/Carolina, Puerto Rico) went 1-4 with a double and a RBI. Jordan Martin (SR/Moore, Okla.), Marcus Rethwill (JR/Portland, Ore.), Connor McCoy (FR), Cecil Jennings (FR/Noble, Okla.), and Michael Garcia (SO/Houston, Texas) also had one hit a piece in game one.
In game two, the Cavaliers scored one run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead, on a RBI single from Ryan Lujan-Leonard, scoring Jordan Martin. The Eagles took a 4-1 lead though in the bottom of the second inning. However, the Cavs fought back in the top of the third, to take a 6-4 lead. Jordan Martin scored the first run of the innings, when Armando Fajardo hit a double to center field. Lujan-Leonard then drove in Gonzales and Fajardo with a single to left field. Lujan-Leonard and Connor McCoy scored on a single to left from Brandon Marerro. The Eagles added one run in the bottom of the bottom of the third, but the Cavs extended the led to 8-5 in the top of the fourth inning. They scored their two runs in the fourth on a squeeze play, exicuted by Fajardo, scoring Layton Moore (SO/Jones, Okla.) and Connor McCoy. SCU scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning, and then tied the game at 8 in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game was 8-8 going into the top of the eighth, but then the Cavs offense exploded for five runs in the extra inning. Jose Gonzales (SO/Houston, Texas) scored the first run of the inning on a Tyler Hebert (JR/Huffman, Texas) single, and then Michael Garcia drove in Hebert. Fajardo then hit a two RBI triple to center, scoring Cecil Jennings and Jardan Martin. Connor McCoy drove in Fajardo with a double to left field to finish the scoring for the Cavaliers. Grant Schamburg (JR/Weatherford, Okla.) then closed the door on the Eagles in the bottom of the eighth. Schamburg earned the win, to improve to 4-1 on the year. Schamburg pitched the final 2 1/3 innings of the game, in releif for Matt Oxner (JR/San Jose, Calif.). Oxner threw the first 5 2/3 innings.
Armando Fajardo had a monterous game, and finished with a 2-5 performance, including a double, triple, and 5 RBI's. Ryan Lujan-Leonard also had a big game, by going 2-5 with 3 RBI's. Brandon Marerro went 2-3 with 2 RBI's, and Jordan Martin went 2-2 with three walks and four runs scored. Connor McCoy finished with two hits and a RBI. Michael Garcia, Layton Moore, and Tyler Hebert also had one hit a piece.
St. Gregory's has won 12 of their last 15 games, and will now head to Moore, Okla. to take on Randall University for a double-header on Tuesday, March 21, starting at 1 PM.
