DALE – Lauren Hood and Delanie Manning homered multiple times and the Dale Lady Pirates beat Silo 14-10 and Tushka 18-2 Saturday at the Tecumseh-Dale Festival. It was only the second day of the season for the Lady Pirates, who had a lopsided opening day Friday.
“We didn't swing it like that yesterday, but it was our first day out,” coach Andy Powell said. “Some basketball players only had one practice. So we were actually a little frustrated yesterday but we scored a lot of runs against two very good teams.”
Trailing 6-2 going to the bottom of the third against Silo, Lacy Hood got things going for the Lady Pirates with a single shot to cut the lead in half. Dani Manning was walked and Delanie hit a two-run shot and Lauren Hood followed with a homer to center to tie at six.
Delanie homered again in the fourth to go ahead 8-6 after Dani doubled and Lauren Hood hit a single shot with two outs to spark a three-run rally in the sixth that would put the Lady Pirates ahead 14-6.
The Lady Pirates put up six runs in the bottom of the first against Tushka and tacked on three in the second and nine in the third to end the game early.
Dani Manning, Delanie Manning, Lauren Hood and Skyler Thompson each homered in the Tushka game. Thompson, Lauren Hood and Lacey Hood each doubled. Thompson and Lauren Hood each drove in four runs, Dani Manning brought in three and Delanie drove home two.
The game got out of hand quickly for Tushka, Powell said.
“If you get hot and the other team doesn't, it's a run-rule in a hurry. We got hot, they hit it right at us,” he said.
The Lady Pirates travel to Washington Monday and host Newcastle Tuesday. They will play at the Stonewall Tournament this weekend.
“We've got a tough schedule. We got to Washington on Monday... and we have the Stonewall Tournament this weekend, which is one of the tougher tournaments in the state small school. But I like our start,” Powell said.
