DALE – Dani Manning went 4-4, with two home runs as the Class 4A No. 1 Dale Lady Pirates mercy-ruled 2A No. 2 Stonewall 16-5 Tuesday evening.
“Stonewall is a quality team,” Dale coach Andy Powell said.” Even though we didn't swing as well as we did yesterday, but we did end up with 17 hits. Either way it's a quality win heading into district play.”
Manning set the tone for Dale, hitting a line drive three-run homer to give the Lady Pirates the lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Stonewall did not let an early lead deter them, as they answered back and tied the game with a three-run third inning, thanks in part to an Alexis Lambert two-run dinger.
Manning hit her second home run of the game in the bottom half of the third to give Dale the lead once more. London Calvillo and Jobey Savage each managed an RBI in the inning to boost the Dale lead to 6-3.
Dale's momentum continued into the fourth, when Dani Manning drove in Lacey Hood to bump their lead to 7-3.
The home run derby continued in the fifth as Stonewell's Mabree Abney and Lambert hit back-to-back home runs. Dale's Sara Lock followed suit in the bottom half of the inning, extending the Dale lead to 7-5.
In the sixth inning, the Lady Pirates scored five runs, started by a Hood homer.
“Going into the inning, I told them we needed to put some runs on the board. Stonewall is very capable of putting up that many runs.”
On the game, Dale managed 17 hits while taking four walks, and leaving four on base. The Lady Pirates had four home runs in the six inning contest.
“It's nice to have those home runs but in the state tournament and the wind is blowing a different direction, those fly balls our outs,” Powell said. “With that said, we've been working on getting the ball on the line.”
Dale (30-3) will host district play this afternoon. They will host Mounds and Kiefer for districts beginning at noon. The games were originally scheduled forThursday but were moved up due to the possibility of inclimate weather.
