McLOUD — Prior to Rachelle Stephens’ last at-bat Tuesday, McLoud coach J.D. Widner said she was going to hit the ball over the right-fielder’s head to win the game.
Stephens did just that with a two-out, game-winning double in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Redskins an 11-10 triumph over the Varnum Whippets.
Karlee Higdon scored the winning run.
Varnum had scored five times in the top of the seventh for a tie at 10.
McLoud, which led 10-3 after four innings, finished the game with six hits and 10 walks.
Amber Cribbs was McLoud’s offensive ringleader with a double and single. Katelyn Hoover notched two singles, scored three times and drove in two runs.
McLoud (13-12) will entertain a three-team district tournament Thursday. Riverside and Little Axe will launch play at 11 a.m. McLoud will then play back-to-back games against the 11 a.m. loser and the 11 a.m. winner in the double-elimination format.
