SHAWNEE – Former Oklahoma Baptist All-American Julian Merryweather tossed eight shutout innings in his AAA debut last week and then moved to 2-0 since joining the Columbus Clippers.

Merryweather fanned eight Scranton/Wilkes-Barre batters, including three top New York Yankees prospects, and allowed four hits and no walks. In his second outing, he fanned four over six innings in a 15-5 win over Louisville, the Cincinnati Reds' AAA affiliate.

Merryweather is now 2-0 with a 2.57 earned run average for Columbus and 6-2 with a 3.20 earned run average between Columbus and Akron this season.

Taylor Hearn, playing for the Bradenton Marauders (Pittsburgh Pirates Advanced A), is 3-4 with a 4.18 earned run average. In his last two starts, Hearn has had a 1.38 ERA, throwing seven shutout innings against Jupiter and allowing two earned runs in six innings against Fort Myers. He has 65 strikeouts in 51.2 innings this season.

Matthew Page of the Potomac Nationals (Washington Nationals Advanced A) is batting .327 in 55 at bats in 19 games. He has four doubles and four RBIs. He found his stride in the last three games, going six for eight at the plate with two runs batted in a road series at Frederick.

Nathan Thompson of the Greeneville Astros (Houston Astros Rookie League) does not start the season until June 22.

OBU also has two players in the independent leagues. Brandon Cuddy has two doubles in five games for the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League and Daniel Baptista, who was third in the MVP voting last year for the Pacific Association, is on the disabled list for the Sonoma (California) Stompers.
