MAUD — Coach Hallea Middleton’s Maud squad overcame an early deficit and captured a district tournament crown with a 6-5 victory over Sasakwa Friday.

Sasakwa led 3-0 before Maud tallied a run in the bottom of the third inning, then put up a four-spot in the fourth for a 5-3 lead. After Sasakwa retied the game at 5, Maud produced the winning run in the sixth.

Jada Wright, who won her third pitching decision in two days, surrendered 10 hits and seven walks Friday but repeatedly left Sasakwa runners stranded on base. Sasakwa posted a 2-run home run and a 3-run roundtripper.

Wright registered three strikeouts.

Madison Whitman of Maud banged a 2-run double in the fourth. Jordan Brewer notched a run-scoring triple in the frame while Kaylee Sanders drove in a run with a single.

In the sixth, an Aubrey Tuttle single and an error set up the game-winning single by Megan Willis.

Jocee Sparks and Tuttle finished with two singles apiece.

“We had some bad innings Friday but we came back,” Middleton said.

The Lady Tigers opened the tournament Thursday with triumphs over Calvin (14-4) and Sasakwa (24-14).

Maud, 16-12, will open regional tournament play Thursday. The site and opponent should be announced Monday.
