BARTLESVILLE, Okla.- The Cavaliers (1-0) opened up their season on Friday afternoon at the OKWU Classic with an 80-77 win over Bethany College (0-1). St. Gregory's and Bethany played a very even game, and the stat sheet will prove it. The Swedes actually shot for a better percentage from the field, 46.7 to 44.1 percent, and they knocked down one more three pointer than the Cavs did as well. Dispite committing 23 turnovers compared to the Swedes 19, SGU won the free-throw, rebounding, second chance point, and bench point battles in the opening test.
The Cavs were led by two newcomers of the SGU program, Gianpaolo Riccio (JR/Avellino, Italy) and Djordje Beronja (JR/Novigrad, Croatia). Riccio went 7-12 from the field, including 3-6 from deep, shot a perfect 5-5 at the charity stripe, and he scored a team-high 22 points. Beronja was one rebound shy of a double-double as he finished with 17 points and 9 rebounds. James Bickers (JR/Tulsa, Okla.) performed well for the Cavs at the point as he finished with 12 points, a game-high of 5 helpers, and he was a perfect 8-8 at the free-throw line. Malik Barnett (SR/Midwest City, Okla.) was a force in down low, as he pulled down 9 boards to go along with his 6 points. Jaquan Dupree (SR/Orangeburg) opened up his SGU career with a strong, 9 point and 7 rebound performance.
The Cavs will wrap up their play at the OKWU Classic on Sat., Oct. 28, when they take on the host team, Oklahoma Wesleyan at 8 PM.
