PRAGUE— Fantastic finish. The Prague Red Devils scored with :08 remaining in their first round playoff showdown with the Perkins-Tryon Demons, Friday night, capturing a 42-40 victory.
Prague, trailing 40-36, was tasked with driving 80-yards with just one timeout and 1:34 remaining in their football lives. The Red Devils were up to the challenge as they drove the length of the field for the winning score.
There was drama along the way.
First, Calvin Boyce converted a third-and-12 at the Prague 24-yard line, with a 12-yard run. Then, Ray Embry, who had not played since the first game of the season, hauled in a leaping catch at the Demon 25-yard line (with a cast and padding on his right hand). The Red Devils ended the drama on a 15 yard touchdown reception by Jake Schultz with just :08 left in the game.
Quarterback Elway Farriell, on the third down and 10 first looked to the left side of the end zone at a well covered Embry, then found Schultz in the middle of the end zone for the score.
The two teams slugged it out for the full 48 minutes of play, sharing two-possession leads and six lead changes.
Perkins scored twice in the first quarter, but failed on both two point conversions, taking a 12-0 lead. Prague answered on a 43-yard run by Ferriell to cut the deficit to 12-8 and took their first lead, 15-12, on a 9-yard Boyce run. Boyce ran over, around and through the Perkins-Tryon defense for 247 yards on 35 carries. Boyce scored three times in the game.
Perkins-Tryon had a weapon at running back, as well. Ty Hill scored five times and ran the ball for 158 yards on 27 carries.
Prague led 22-19 at the half and went up by 10 points on Boyce's second score of the game. He leaped over the pile for a 2-yard score with 9:05 left in the third, giving Prague the 29-19 lead.
The Demons answered quickly. Brandon Martin took the kickoff to his own 19 yard line and hit the hole before finally being dragged down at the Prague two yard line. Hill scored from 2-yards out to cut the deficit to 29-26.
Prague bumped the lead back up to 10 on a 16-yard score by Boyce with 1:27 remaining in the third quarter and after a three and out by the defense looked they may cruise to the finish, but a muffed punt set up the Demons on the Prague 20. Austin Mages found Chad Black for a 20-yard scoring strike to cut the margin to 36-33.
Prague was then forced to punt on its own 20-yard line. Perkins-Tryon took advantage of a four yard punt , scoring on a three-play 24-yard drive to take a 40-36 lead with 6:37 left.
Prague was intercepted on the next possession, but the defense held, setting up the game-winning drive.
Prague finished with 284 yards rushing on 36 carries, while the Demons ran for 154 yards on 43 attempts. Ferriell threw for 163 yards on 11 completions and three scores. Perkins-Tryon gained 121 yards through the air.
Prague will travel to face Sulphur next Friday night.
