MACOMB—The Macomb Hornets hosted the Alex Longhorns for a Friday hoops doubleheader and came up on the short end of both contests. The Lady Hornets were doubled-up by Alex 48-24 while the dropped a 50-38 decision.
In the nightcap, the Hornets spotted Alex the first 11 points of the contest and would never get back even with the visitors. “We got behind big and never recovered,” said Macomb head coach Mathew Riggs. “We aren't coming out at the start of the game like we should and that is my fault,” he said.
Macomb got its' first score at the 3:02 mark of the first quarter on a layup by post Andrew Boydsten. Boydsten finished with eight points on the night.
The Longhorns led 17-4 after the first quarter and maintained a double digit lead of 25-13 at the intermission. That's when the Hornets got things stirred up.
Macomb began chipping away at the Alex lead and cut the deficit to 27-21 on freshman Darian Rougeux's second trey of the quarter. He finished with nine points in the contest, with all three buckets coming from beyond the arc.
The Hornets stayed close and got the lead down to five points with 2:46 remaining in the third quarter on two made free throws by Coby Mason. That would be as close as Macomb would come.
“We are just not making that winning play when the game is hanging in the balance,” said Riggs. “We are playing so many young kids — it is a confidence thing,” he said.
The fourth quarter belonged to Alex point guard Nick Venable. Venable kept the Hornets defense at bay in the quarter by controlling tempo and finding a home at the free throw line. Venable went to the line four times and hit five of his eight free throws to ice the game. He finished with a game-high 13 points. Tatten Anderson finished with a dozen.
Macomb was led by Blaine Cope. Cope came off of the bench to score 12 points, eight in the second half. Boydsten added eight for the 4-4 Hornets.
Macomb will face Bowlegs next Tuesday at 4 o'clock as part of the Little River Conference Tournament being played at North Rock Creek.
In the girls game, the Lady Hornets dug a huge hole in the first quarter. They trailed 18-1 after the end of the first and 33-12 at the half. Haily Morris led the Lady Longhorn charge with 12 first half points. She finished the game with 18 points.
Macomb scored their first five points of the game from the free throw line and didn't make a field goal until the 5:05 mark of the second quarter when Danee Hancock found the bottom of the net. Hancock finished with four points.
The Lady Hornets played even with Alex for much of the second quarter, but slipped more in the third quarter, falling behind 44-21.
Kelsey Dillon led Macomb in scoring with nine points. Ashton Powell chipped in five points for the Lady Hornets.
