SHAWNEE – It was not a good day on the mats for the Shawnee wrestling team, who lost to Piedmont 55-18 Tuesday at home to wrap up the first portion of their season.
The Wolves won only four matches on the night with the most exciting going to heavyweight Coby Ezell, who won by fall in the second overtime.
“That made it exciting,” coach Larry James said.
Justus Sparks won the 113-pound weight class with a 9-2 decision that included a 3-point and 2-point near fall.
Donovan Bertram won a hard-fought 2-0 decision in the 145 weight class, thanks to a takedown in the second round and Fisher Johnson (152) won by fall in 1:33.
Isaac Bertram had the 106-pound match all but won after taking an 11-0 lead into the third round, but fell victim to a reverse and pin to start things off on the wrong foot for the Wolves.
James wasn't surprised with the challenge that Piedmont gave his boys but wishes they had performed a bit better.
“They're a good team. They're obviously ranked No. 3 for a reason,” he said.
The junior high squad had a very successful night, beating Piedmont 65-9.
Shawnee will be back in action January 5 at Jenks.
