TECUMSEH — Tecumseh battled back from a mountainous first-half hole before finally succumbing 65-50 to Class 3A third-ranked Mt. St. Mary Tuesday night.
Tecumseh trailed 35-14 at halftime and the deficit grew to 46-18 after the first 2 ½ minutes of the third quarter.
With four minutes remaining in the game, Tecumseh had cut the margin to nine points.
“We just started so slow. We probably hit about 20 percent of our first-half shots,” Tecumseh coach Eric Litherland said. “We didn’t quit. It’s something to build on.”
Zathan Bowman, Tecumseh’s leading scorer with 22, chalked up three 3-point field goals in the second half.
Anthony Billy added 11 points as Tecumseh fell to 10-6.
For the night, Tecumseh was 15-of-49 from the field for 30.6 percent.
St. Mary (10-3) received a game-high 21 points from Stephen Hall.
“Jacob Green did a great job for us off the bench,” Litherland said.
Tecumseh will battle Perkins-Tryon at 2:20 p.m. Thursday in opening-round action of the Jones Tournament.
A 21-3 first-quarter blitz by St. Mary was too much for the Lady Savages to handle in a 68-45 setback.
Tecumseh outscored the visitors 14-4 in the second quarter to pull within 25-17 but couldn’t get any closer the rest of the game.
Taylor Walker led Tecumseh (3-10) with 12 points, followed by Courtney Mansell with 11. Mansell knocked down three shots from beyond the 3-point line.
Kilee Jones also had a trey in finishing with seven points.
St. Mary went 17 of 31 from the free-throw stripe for 54.8 percent. Tecumseh was 9 of 14 from the line for 64.2 percent.
St. Mary had three players score in double figures.
The Lady Savages will tangle with Cushing at 12:40 p.m. Thursday at the Jones Tournament.
