BETHEL ACRES—The McLoud and Bethel hoops squads battled to the bitter end, Tuesday night, in two overtime thrillers. The Lady Redskins downed the Lady Wildcats 52-49 before the Wildcats clawed out a 57-55 decision over the Redskins.
In the nightcap, Bethel found a way into the middle of the McLoud defense for two inside buckets to one, send the game into overtime, then tow, finish off the Redskins.
At the end of regulation, Bethel, on a sidelines inbounds play, found an isolated Anthony Franklin for the tie with :01 left, then at the end of overtime, Jaylon Gordon made a full-court trek to hit the game winning five footer with :02 remaining. McLoud had a final gasp but their full-court pass went out of bounds to end it.
“We found a way to win,” said Bethel head coach Bryan Jennings. “We had some stops that mattered and hit two big shots.”
McLoud wasn't without chances. In the fourth quarter the Redskins went just 2-of-7 from the free throw line and looked like they had found a way to send the game into two overtimes. Garrett Wilson hit a driving layup with :11 left in OT to knot the score at 55. That's when Gordon went coast to coast for the win.
The game was tight the entire way. McLoud held an early 19-15 lead after the first quarter, but the Wildcats scratched their way to a 28-28 halftime stalemate.
McLoud's Chase Mahtapene led all scorers with 20 and Brandon Vinson hit for 13 for the Redskins. Wilson added nine.
Bethel was led by Gordon with 16 and Franklin scored 15, Ben Pfieff and Drae Wood each scored seven for the 11-9 Wildcats.
The girls game was just as exciting.
Bethel held an early 8-7 lead after the first quarter, but the Lady Redskins made some noise in the second. They led 26-22 at the half with Katelyn Hoover and Callie Cardin doing most of the scoring. Hoover scored 11 first half points and Cardin added six.
The Lady Wildcats fought their way back to a 35-35 tie after three quarters, thanbks to the bench spark by Faith Hanna. Hanna scored all seven of her points in the third, including a three-pointer with 1:40 left, giving Bethel a 33-32 lead.
The two teams traded punches throughout the final quarter and was sent into overtime by Bethel's Brooke Shaw with :06 showing on the clock. Trailing 47-45, Shaw found an opening in the McLoud defense and hit a jumper from the right short corner for the tie.
The overtime turned into a free throw shooting contest and the Lady Redskins emerged. McLoud wnet to the line 12 times and hit just five, but was enough as Bethel made only five trips.
With :07 left McLoud's Lexie Boyer went to the line with a 52-49 lead and full of confidence after hitting two freebies just 28 seconds earlier. This time she bounced out both chances, but the Bethel three-point attempt by Kirsten Winters bounced away no good.
Hoover led all scorers with 17 points, while Cardin added a dozen for McLoud.
Bethel was led by Kelsie Wood's 12 and Harley Gregory finished with 11.
